SUMMIT FOR WOMEN’S SOCIAL JUSTICE MEDIA -July 16 in Detroit

Women’s Media Equity Collaborative (WMEC) is offering $7500 in scholarships to aid women to get to the SUMMIT for Women’s Social Justice Media organizations/outlets July 16 in Detroit at the start of the Allied Media Conference.

To be eligible women need to 1) fill out the survey here currently being conducted by WMEC.  And 2) you need to register (the form includes scholarship info) for the SUMMIT here.   This will hold your place, show your commitment to building movement, and allow us to plan meals for all attendees. Most important this provides WMEC with data about your scholarship needs.

Deadline to submit registration/scholarship needs is June 17.  WMEC anticipates making between 20 & 25 scholarship awards on average of about $350 each. Recognizing that travel costs vary from different parts of the country some awards may be higher, others lower. Awards will be made on a case-by-case basis.  Groups led by women of color, low income women, queer women, the disabled and moms are priorities for scholarships.

The goals of the SUMMIT are to:
* Create Trust & Relationships across race/class/geography/media-genre borders
* Share Field Developments and present the results of the survey
* Build For The Future, embrace new digital paradigm along with political/economic shifts
* Advocate Gender Justice discourse amidst independent media and the larger public sphere
* Design a New Fund that is sustainable and nurtures collective growth

WMEC is grateful to both On the Issues magazine and Third Wave Foundation who have stepped forward to sponsor the SUMMIT.  Their support makes the scholarships available. WMEC also re-allocated some funds from its Social Science Research Council grant of $30,000 awarded in June 2008, regrant funds from the Ford Foundation. Additional sponsors may still step forward enabling WMEC to expand its scholarship offerings.
